Capstar is produced by Novartis Animal Health. In 1996, Novartis Animal Health was formed when two Swiss companies merged. Sentinel is an oral flea and heartworm prevention that works similar to Program. The other types of flea control available are applied to the skin and include Advantage, Frontline, Promeris and Biospot. Advantage and Biospot are used to control fleas while Frontline and Promeris are used to control fleas and ticks. Capstar is an oral flea preventative that is given once monthly. Capstar is safe to give to puppies and kittens 4 weeks and older, weighing at least 2 pounds. It is safe to use in pregnant and nursing cats and dogs. Capstar controls fleas by killing the adult flea and therefore stopping more flea eggs from being laid. It has 90% effectiveness at killing the adult fleas within 4 hours of its administration to dogs and within 6 hours of administration to cats. Capstar can be safely used along with other medications and flea preventions.
